Week 2 of the One Room Challenge™ is squarely upon us
and I have yet to commit to any major decisions for the bathroom. Yikes.
To follow along from the beginning, you can click below on each weekly link. My One Room Challenge™ schedule will likely go as follows:
WEEK 1: Plan + Space
WEEK 2: Process
WEEK 3: Progress + Setbacks
WEEK 4: Lighting + Paint
WEEK 5: Plan Revisions
WEEK6: Reveal
This is where reality comes into play – real
life, real time, real budget. Going into
this ORC, I am determined to minimize any invasive maneuvers such as moving/running new
electricity and patching dry wall. So
that means I am limited in lighting choices to over vanity light fixtures rather than
sconces. Bummer. Most options are lame but I found a few that I like
including the one I used on my original board.
It also turns out the overhead boob light is one of those light/fan
combo jobbers. Bigger bummer. Those
few options are downright dreadful.
Dashed are my hopes of a glam brassy/chrome light over the loo unless
of course I can convince the mister to separate the two and run electricity to
a separate exhaust fan over the shower.
Fine and dandy Sandy in dream landy but in reality that involves the mister cramming
himself into the tiny eaves of the attic near the edge of the roof to cut more
holes in the ceiling. Me thinks he has a
limited appetite for electrical work given the kitchen fiasco. And so begins LightingGate.
Moving on to fabric.
I started out with a loose idea in my head of using some gorgeous
vintage Chinoiserie barkcloth fabric that I purchased a few months ago. It was so stunning that it was love at first
sight. The problem is that it has a few
issues - a few holes here and there from age as well as some sun damage. Having come from the 40s, it also had it’s fair share of exposure to
cigarette smoke. I soaked the fabric in Oxi Clean
for a few days as I shared here, and it came out much brighter and better
smelling but the sun damage is still evident in spots. However, I am still determined to make this
fabulous Auntie Mame situation work as a shower curtain. Gave it a trial run...
Next. The vanity
mirror. I mentioned last week that the matching spit catcher mirror
has got to go. Luckily I found a green and gold mirror at a consigment store
last week for the right price that I pounced on. I think the green will play nicey with
the Chinoiserie fabric. Done and
done.
But problems began once I started playing around with a
design board using the elements I had earmarked. It all sort of just fell flat for me. And so begins my interior monologue
otherwise known as ORCGATE…
This is fine. But fine like lima beans. Or maybe it’s not fine. Wait, it’s kind of like baby poo.
It’s a naked baby poo room with a fancy burp cloth.
....................................................................................................................................................................................................................
To hell with the mister. I am adding that brass overhead fixture. It can’t be that bad to run a separate
exhaust fan. This will definitely glam
things up. Better but still a little poo-like.
Maybe I should lighten things up…

Boogers. Boogery
mayonnaise. And that light bar is just
not doing this any favors. If mister V
is going up in the attic to run an exhaust fan he could drop some electric
lines for sconces while he is up there…
....................................................................................................................................................................................................................
sconces |
Ah…now we are getting somewhere. Those petal sconces are like gold
jewelry. Perfect. But mister V is really going to kill me. Invasive work is piling up quickly - dry wall
patch for the vanity light, new electrical for sconces, mucho dinero for sconces, install separate exhaust
fan for shower and add additional outlet.
Maybe I should wallpaper instead…
....................................................................................................................................................................................................................
wallpaper | fabric |
Let the wallpaper be the showstopper
and switch out the shower curtain fabric for something more understated. I don’t need fancy lights when I have that
fancy paper. But come to think of it,
that glam brass sitch
has got to happen. And that mirror just
isn’t jiving with the paper. And the
light bar, while pretty, still isn’t doing any favors…
....................................................................................................................................................................................................................
vanity mirror |
Tortoise. Bam.
Gold petals. Bam. Chintz and spots. Bam, bam. Oh look, and the missing bird. Kablammo. But what about that jewel box feel I was going for…
....................................................................................................................................................................................................................
wallpaper |
Dark and moody. Bammalammadingdong. But purple. And spendy. Waaay spendy with all the everythings.
Maybe I should stick with painting the wall after all and only splurge
on a few things…
....................................................................................................................................................................................................................
And so goes the design cha cha. I am obsessed with my Chinoiserie fabric
but I am also sort of really obsessing over Domesticate’s Nicolette wallpaper and dots fabric combo paired with Furbish’s
tortoise mirror and gold petal sconces.
That, my friends, is right in my chintzy granny glam wheelhouse. Alas, this is real chez V life, and while not
off the charts spendy, that room combo is beyond my budget for
this project so I will likely land somewhere between the two spectrums. Plus, a promise is a promise, and I promised
the mister a minimally invasive makeover.
But then again, I also promised not to
do another ORC for a very long time…

You. Are. Effin. Awesome. I, of course, love the domesticate wallpaper far more than the baby poo. Good luck with the mister. I know whatever you do will be fantastic.
ReplyDeleteSo many choices! I kind of like the paint vs wallpaper idea. I think it will bring more attention to your other textiles.
ReplyDeleteIt's all going to look beautiful! can't wait to see!
why does it have to be between baby poo and booger mayonnaise? also mood boards don't tell the truth sometimes. they lie. they are tricky liars those mood boards. i think the mirror you bought is fantastic and you should riff off that all the way to home plate.
ReplyDeleteWhatever you do will be awesome! But those gold petal sconces are kind of everything to me. I'm sure if you're husband finds out that those sconces are everything to some random chick on the internet, he'll go for them for sure. Right?
ReplyDeleteI am totally guilty of hoarding Domesticate's fabric!! I'm using Charcoal Dots in my room. My vote I for the last one with the tortoise mirror! Good luck with the hubs! Glad to hear I am not the only one there!
ReplyDeletei just had a good 5:30am laugh and it was great! Love your writing and love that mirror and love that you have convinced your hubs to give you those sconces, they are amazing! Can't wait to see what you choose for the rest! xoxo
ReplyDeleteOmg, these are tough decisions. Whatever you decide it will be fabulous and the ORC is really not worth your marriage;)
ReplyDeleteI'm a wallpaper and spots kind of gal, but i'm not even worried, because whatever you choose will be awesome. And if you don't wallpaper, there are other paint colors besides baby poo! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of loving the moody wallpaper board but whatever you do will be fab! I hate that B word too - kind of gets in the way of things.
ReplyDeleteOhhh Wallpaper...Come to Momma! I love the bold florals but something about that spotted one is speaking my language right now! I'm sure whatever you choose to do will turn into perfection! Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteMy fave is the 6th one down. Whatever you do, it will be crazy gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteI want it all! Nothing short of fabulous here!
ReplyDeleteYou crack me up. We all have these battles :-)
ReplyDeleteAnythi g you do will be fabulous no doubt. Cant wait to see.
Dude.....I'm all confused now:) Can't you just get hubby drunk and make him sign a waiver? Then do whatever you want? Huh? Lights camera action......I will be on pins and needles to hear about the outcome!
ReplyDeleteDitto to what Sherry said.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, I love the dark and moody. Please do it. I'll buy your hubby a beer?
ReplyDeleteOh, hell. My wine glass WUZ way too full for me to fully assess. BUT, I am really feelin' the papered walls + sconces situation. Thus, my champagne tastes (that queue up money arguments with hubster, which then proceed to large vino glasses)
ReplyDeleteWhat?
Did I say all that?
Hope you have better luck convincing Mr. Chez V.
xo,
ag
Yes to the bold floral wallpaper! I completely agreed when you said you didn't need fancy lights and fancy wallpaper, until you showed those sconces against the black ~ now I think you need the black wallpaper AND the sconces!! Fingers crossed you get your way! :)
ReplyDeleteOh it is so hard to pick just one way to go. Love that fabric though. Would be great if you could somehow still incorporate it.
ReplyDeleteYou are hilarious. Lot's a great options here. Poor mister! But really, those petal sconces are a must.
ReplyDeleteAnd once again...this post is proof that you're hilarious and amazing and super dope. I love the dark and moody and having a hit of black in there in general.
ReplyDeleteLaughing out loud over here! Now you have way too many gorgeous options to decide from and a lot of husband negotiations! Good luck and I can't wait to see what you decide! :)
ReplyDeleteDude, the dark floral paper and shower curtain with the furbish mirror and sconces. Die. I'm gonna start playing the lottery. Maybe we could win in time?! Damn I hate real life. What if you pulled a darker color from your fab fabric for the walls, like a deep plum? Some sort of nod to the wallpaper. And I think you found the best overhead sconce you could find. Why are there so few choices for those suckers?!
ReplyDeleteThe dark wallpaper option. I'm dead.
ReplyDeleteThat fabric is everything. And I think I have the larger version of your brass light fixture in my home! Can't wait to see which route you go.
ReplyDeleteCannot lie- love the wallpapers, any of them! I am anxious to see which direction you head. Oh and PS: that is one of my favorite bar fixtures should you end up going that route- even better in person!
ReplyDeleteTuning in for this makeover....I love the wallpaper and gold sconces! So fun!
ReplyDeleteLove your scheming & of course obsessed with domesticate anything!! Love her prints, your bath is going to be amazing! Xx jana
