One Room Challenge Linking Event - Week 4

Well Judas Priest we are already at Week 4 of the One Room Challenge™ link up - where rubber meets the road for most folks.  Plans get modified as set backs cause course corrections and to-do lists get slashed to the vital few that can realistically still get completed.  Once again, I find myself in week 4 with no paint on the walls.  But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.  To catch up on weeks 1-3, click on the links below:

WEEK 1:  Plan + Space - a moody bathroom refresh
WEEK 2:  Process - where indecision reigns supreme
WEEK 3:  Progress + Setbacks - in which the heroine calls upon Mame Dennis
WEEK 4:  Lighting + Paint - Plan Revisions
WEEK 5:  Plan Revisions - Lights + Paint
WEEK 6:  Reveal

Not going to belabor the point, but I am behind.  This is going to be a short one today.  I should be discussing paint and lighting this week but I am still waiting on some prep work to cure before I can paint so I will talk about a few plan revisions instead.

I spent this week caulking like a mo fo so that the gaps in the beadboard, trim, and crown molding, which I pointed out in week one would no longer be noticeable.  These small details will likely go unnoticed by most but they have driven me crazy for 6 years.  Small victories for workmanship.  I’ll spare you the details, but me on a ladder straddling the tub wielding a caulk gun over my head made for some pretty entertaining moments.  My fingers may or may not have been stuck to my hair when it was all said and done.

Caulking and spackle.  Burned up hull of a light.  Old paint color.  Empty loo.
And one brass knob, for those with eagle eyes.

As to lighting, this past week was full of fireworks.  That overhead boob/fan combo that I complained about last Thursday morning literally assploded on Thursday evening.  As predicted, pyrotechnics and we haven’t even tackled the sconces yet.  I cannot make this shiz up.  I flipped the switch in the middle of the night and it responded with a *poof.* Dark electrical burn marks.  Bad karma or divine providence?  I’ll let you decide.  Alls I know is that Momma V is getting a new overhead light in addition to sconces.  Bang bang.

#brasstastic

In other news, goodies are arriving daily and I just cannot wait to get this room put together.  I keep calling it my bath-o-brass.  The brass shower rod arrived along with the components to make a lucite towel rod.  The switch plates are heavy and heavenly.  My sconces came and let me just say deee-vine.  I squealed with glee.  I have every digit crossed that nothing goes wrong with the sconce installation.  Very tight squeeze and I fear a stud in the corner might make it very tricky.  As it turns out, the green mirror I bought is too big with the sconces so I went on a mad dash today to locate a new one and find one I did.  Divine providence strikes again.  I'll save that along with the full monty on the sconces for reveal day.

When lead times prove too long, or worse, you get no response from sellers, build your own

dreams intersecting with reality

I picked up Mrs. Robinson.  She is every bit as fabulous and bitchy in person as on screen.  Turns out she is larger than life.  I planned on re-framing her but the frame in which I found her is a decent wood one so I may just paint it to save a few bones.  A pesky outlet will prevent me from hanging her at the proper height above the toilet where I had planned on hanging her.

Now she will have to go on the opposite wall, which, as it turns out, is perfect because it is a much larger expanse plus I purchased another stunner from Jenny Andrews Anderson that will take pride of place over the loo.  CAN NOT wait for it to arrive.  And yes, I just said you would have to wait until reveal week to see the full monty but I was never any good at keeping promises.  This is sort of what the situation will look like. The mirror I picked up today is similar in feel to the one below...

I need the lighting installs to go off without a hitch this wknd so that I can start painting on Monday.  Let’s have a collective moment of silence for the mister – he gets real pissy when he has to crawl up in the attic space and run electrical.  I’m guessing it has something to do with dark, cramped spaces, populated with spiders the size of Kansas.  I’m already getting the silent treatment.  Whatever.

I told him it could be worse.  The spiders could be the size of dogs with 2” fangs.  Like the new ones discovered in some tropical rain forest.  Seriously, wtf?  I won't even post a picture because when I saw it I puked in my mouth and lost feeling in my face.  effing spiders.

Check out what the other folks are up to this week.

One Room Challenge Linking Event - Week 3 - in which the heroine calls upon Mame Dennis

Patrick Dennis:  Is the English lady sick, Auntie Mame?
MameShe’s not English, darling…she’s from Pittsburgh.
Patrick Dennis:  She sounded English.
MameWell, when you’re from Pittsburgh, you have to do something.

And when it's week 3 of the One Room Challengelinking event, you have to do something too.  Welcome back and thank you to Linda for hosting this shindig and to you folks for tuning in and speaking up.  You can binge read weeks 1 & 2 by clicking the links below, if you are just tuning in to the action.

WEEK 1:  Plan + Space - a moody bathroom refresh
WEEK 2:  Process - where indecision reigns supreme
WEEK 3:  Progress + Setbacks - in which the heroine calls upon Mame Dennis
WEEK 4:  Lighting + Paint
WEEK 5:  Plan Revisions
WEEK 6:  Reveal

Last week I was sort of a mess of indecision and my focus got derailed for various reasons unrelated to the ORC. But thankfully I’ve got you folks to carry my baggage.  Because, sheesh, boy did y’all come to the rescue.  Seriously, thank you from the bottom of my procrastinatin’ heart for the suggestions and such.  This room is getting back on track with a quickness.  Honestly, I really just needed to stew in my own juices for a minute before following through with my original instinct, plus a few tweaks. Most of you will be happy to know that the vintage Chinoiserie fabric is back in play in a major way. This fabric was the hands down favorite with my IG (@chezviviv) tribe.

I switched gears on the paint.  The BM 2109-40 Smoked Oyster was too fleshy and reading a little purplish.  The BM 2152-70 Mayonnaise was too, well, mayonnaisey. That's what I get for selecting colors from memory.  I visited my other favorite paint folks at Sherwin Williams and bothered them for an afternoon with my search for the right dark brown.  I assure you Mame Dennis would rather go 2 days without bathtub gin than have a booger presley color on her walls.  I dragged my fabric in with me this time and it was much easier to narrow the brown options down to two. I will tell you next week how I landed on my final choice because there is a practical lesson to be learned.  You can see the wall color and trim color a bit in the background below...along with some pretty fantastic passementerie that I intend to use to take my bespoke shower curtain to a whole other crazy glam next level shizznizzy.

So Week 3.  What did I promise?  Progress.  What’s that?  Setbacks.  No shortage of those.  While physical progress may be on the lean side, mental progress has been made in spades. As indicated, I’ve committed to a direction.   In the interest of time, I had to compromise on a few dream scenarios which included many pretties like Andrea’s too-die-for wallpaper and textile designs.  Note to self, next project plan ahead so that goodness becomes reality.  But I think the end result will be equally smashing and channel the fabulously flamboyant glam vibe for which I am known.  Now, if I was advising someone else, I would make the case for the long game dream scenario.  Be patient about long lead times, invest in the good stuff, let the room evolve, yada yada yada

But this is the ORC folks and you have ordered up some dramatical cliff-hanging turn arounds and I aim to please.  So rather than do the prudent thing, I am going full boogie in the direction of my Auntie Mame dreams with confidence that I can still pull this off in 3 weeks.  Because let’s face it, if left to my own devices, the room, even in it’s dream state, would never get finished.  A deadline is a necessary bedfellow in the home of two incurable procrastinatorsKnow thyself, as another smart participant advised!

Where were we?  Ah, setbacks.  My indecision has caused me no end of headaches but I think we’ve pretty well covered that.  Suffice it to say, I am forced to reinvent the wheel because now, having finally committed, the things I want have lead times that extend well past reveal day.  See above.  The exhaust fan/light combo continues to be a thorn.  I may or may not have a trim issue.  We have yet to tackle the electricity but I can pretty much predict the usual pyrotechnic chicanery that this money pit tees up every time we visit it’s under belly.  I am sure I will be dog cussing an ill-placed wall stud.  Stay tuned for that one.

To be determined/done:  overhead light, shower curtain rod, mirror (the one I purchased may be too wide), sink faucet, framing, wall patching, electricity, painting, and sewing.

On the upside, here is what I have nailed down:  vanity lighting, towel bar, vintage brass hardware, towels, fabric and trim, wall color, trim color, artwork, and a lion’s head brass cache pot, because in the parlance of Mame Dennis, whether you are from Pittsburgh or as in my case, from Cincinnati dealing with a tiny space and budget, ‘…you have to do something’…something that is ridiculously incongruent and fabulous, that is.

If this thing shapes up like I envision, I will be taking all my social calls in the loo.  Along with a stiff Sidecar delivered on a tray by my house mister.

That's it for me for week 3.  This next week is shaping up to be a busy one.  Be sure to check in over at Calling It Home to find the other 90+ linking participants.

Friday's Flowers and Gratitude

Happy Friday.  Friday for me is always about flowers and spiffing up the joint for wknd festivities.  Momma always gets fresh flowers from the market for her home for the weekend and it is a ritual that I have happily carried on at my home – whether it is picking up fresh cut flowers, cutting something from the yard, or grabbing an orchid when my fancy strikes.

Thanks for the One Room Challenge™ love yesterday.  There is some serious talent and inspiration in the bunch.  Your comments truly make my day.  Truly.  As in I walk around most of the day chuckling about email convos with all my interwebs friends - which can prove to be a little awkward at times.  I find myself referring to so and so during a conversation with my mister or my sister about such and such, and they are usually like, ‘who the hell is xxxx and how do you know her/him?’  Um.

‘My friend from the internet/instagram/blog/blahblahblah…she/he absolutely adores booze/chinoiserie/art/gold/glitter/brass animals/green/vintage/animal print/tiny weird cat lols and would LOVE this, I must take a picture immediately.’

This is often followed by a very awkward pause and serious side eye. ‘I’d really rather like to get on with the actual act of enjoying my food/wine or getting to our actual destination already as opposed to you always taking damn pictures of it.’  Rude.

But so’s anyway, I love y’all and mean it.  Just know I appreciate you appreciating my jam.

Have a great one.  I’ll be out searching for ORC shit today with visions of wine plums dancing in my head.
